REFERENCE THIS
Another peek behind the curtain
So, here’s something I’ve never done. Then again, I’ve never had a newsletter before…
Like I’ve said in previous installments, the new WEAPON X-MEN series I’m writing -- despite its obvious mutant pedigree -- is firmly set in the wider Marvel Universe. That means also using elements and characters and locations that sit well outside of X-land. I’ve never particularly liked it when the X-Men existed only in its own bubble. Creatively, I want access to it all. It’s a big part of the fun of playing in a shared universe sandbox.
So, with that in mind, I thought I’d go ahead and share some of the reference materials that are being utilized -- at various levels -- in the first handful of issues. Maybe this will give you a sense of the tone and the fun that we’re trying to get across.
These are just a few of the things I send directly to the artist. Sometimes it’s for direct reference. Other times, it’s just to evoke mood or a particular vibe that we’re going for.
Looking at these disparate bits, all put together like this… well, it just reminds me why I like writing superhero comicbooks.
And, y’know, if it sparks some level of bizarre speculation out there (for anyone who’s as into this stuff as I am), then what’s the harm in that? Again, it’s all part of the fun, right…?
(by the way, the artists referenced above are, in order: Steranko, Byrne/Austin, Pérez, Ladronn and Cockrum. Only the best…)
So, let’s all raise a glass… to the continued indulgence in our childhood passions. May they never wane.
See you next time.
