Thanks for this time machine travel to the past from a reader that was there at the advent of the Miller Batman revival with Dark Knight Returns. I favor alternative comics to superheroes butt have a love and appreciation for the darker edgier renditions like Dark Knight. I haven't gotten a chance to get a copy yet but want to. I have the "Batman Vampire" collection and consider it one of my best comics / graphic novels in my library. Restacked! Great piece here.

Wow, really cool to hear a first hand account from someone who actually got to experience the genius of TDKR when it first came out! Crazy to hear it was instantly game changing. (Although I do have to say, I loved the 80's Secret Wars I must confess haha)

I was 22 in 1986, and I was still buying a lot of comics. “dark Knight” was the only comic I ever subscribed to. I also ended up buying them at a store because the subscription came over a month later and were second and third printings. I’ve never felt comics as a whole ever had as much brilliance all at once after the mid -eighties.

Reading about your apathy toward comics in the mid-’80s reminds me of how many of us ’90s comics kids felt by the end of that decade. You and Grant jumping onto the X-Men books in 2000 was my 1986/Dark Knight Returns moment.

That Book 2 cover is so great! 🔥 I didn’t discover The Dark Knight Returns until the 2nd printing of the combined TPB… but it just blew my mind at the time (and the story still holds up after all these years! 😎) Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 🍻
